Edwin McMasters Stanton
Stanton was a U.S. Attorney General and U.S. Secretary Of War in Lincoln’s administration. He was frequently criticized for being too cautious and for micromanaging everything. He helped Lincoln win the war and was also key in the hunt for Lincoln’s killer, John Wilkes Booth. He was later named Associate Justice of the Supreme Court but he died before taking office. He appeared on a $1 US Treasury Note in from 1890 and he’s also appeared on a postage stamp.
